The most congenial places to stay are outside the town, across Ashtamudi Lake from the main jetty (easy to get to by auto-rickshaw, but more difficult to return from). The railway retiring rooms on the first floor of the railway station are spacious, clean, and very cheap (Rs150).

Apart from the hotel restaurants, other places to eat include the Indian Coffee House on Main Road, and Guru Prasad, a little way along, which serves great south Indian veggie  "meals". The best of the hotel restaurants can be found in the Sudarsan, which has a good-value "meals" restaurant along with its more upmarket a/c restaurant.

Government Guest House,3km north of town, by Ashtamudi Lake phone 0474/743620. Characterful Euro-Keralan building, once the British Residency, with curved tiled roof and gracious verandas, in a vast compound. Ye olde British furniture in cavernous spaces, but there are just five rooms. Simple meals are served by arrangement, although most people head over to the Yatri Nivas to eat. You can reserve backwater cruise tickets here. Book in advance - some travelers come to Kollam purely to stay here. Rs100-400.

Karthika, off Main Road, near the Mosque phone 0474/751821. A large and popular budget hotel with clean, plain rooms (some a/c), ranged around a courtyard in which the centerpiece is, rather unexpectedly, three huge nude figures; very handy for the railway station and the jetty. You can hire cable TV for a night (Rs20). Rs200-300.

KTDC Yatri Nivas, across from the jetty phone 0474/745538. Modern, clean rooms (two a/c) with attached bathrooms and nice balconies, in a great location overlooking the lake; the best fall-back if the Government Guest House is full. The restaurant is very popular with travelers, serving good barbecue lake fish, and there's a beer parlor. Rs200-400.

Palm Lagoon,Vellimon West phone 0474/523974. In a beautiful location on Ashtamudi Lake but a good 15km from town. Pleasant thatched cottages and with breakfast or full board, good Ayurvedic treatment facilities, and the opportunity to explore the backwaters. Book directly or through DTPC for directions and a discount. Rs1500-2500.

Sudarsan,Parameswar Nagar phone 0474/744322. Central and popular, but definitely not as palatial as the posh foyer would lead you to believe, this place features a wide range of rooms, some with a/c and cable TV. A busy, dark a/c restaurant with a white plaster Last Supper at one end and a TV at the other dishes up Indian and Chinese food, and there's a bar. Rs400-2500.
