Kumily has accommodation to suit all pockets and new hotels and "resorts" emerge each season. Thankfully, most of the accommodation lies well outside the bazaar area, dotted along the Thekkady Road leading to the park. Homestays such as Green Garden are a popular option - ask around the bazaar and you'll soon be pointed in the right direction; most charge about Rs300 and offer plantation tours and home-cooked food.

Nearly every establishment has its own café-restaurant, ranging from the Taj Garden Retreat's smart à la carte, to the more traveler-oriented Coffee Inn. The brand new Pepper Garden Coffee House is hidden in the lush plantation en route to Claus Garden Home. This inexpensive place serves up wonderful coffees, teas (both grown in the garden) and excellent breakfasts, including steamed puttu with mung beans and bananas; in the evening there is a bonfire and live tabla and flute and it's open until midnight. However, if you're on a really tight budget, the best place to eat in Kumily bazaar is the Hotel Saravana, one of several no-frills "meals" joints on the main bazaar. Their thalis, served on plantain leaves, are tasty, cheap and always freshly cooked, and they serve up deliciously crisp dosas.

Ambadi, next to turn-off for Mangaladevi temple, Thekkady Road phone 0486/322193. Pleasant hotel which has seen better times. Decent rooms sporting coir mats and woodcarvings, and the non-a/c "cottages" are good value. The restaurant serves good chicken. Rs400-1500.

Claus Garden Home, five minutes' walk south of the main bus stand (no phone) behind the Taj. Difficult to find, but worth the effort. Simple rooms in a cosy house with sociable verandas and mandala murals, surrounded by pepper plantations. Self-catering only. Rs100-200.

Coffee Inn,Thekkady Road (no phone). Surly staff but good budget accommodation: a handful of simple rooms (one en suite) around a covered terrace and garden. Their "Wild Huts" annexe has six rooms (and two raffia tree houses) with shared shower and toilet, and a spacious enclosed garden with a pond. The café, serving delicious homemade Western food including fresh bread, is a popular place for breakfast after the early-morning boat ride in the sanctuary. Rs100-300.

Green Garden Cottage, next door to Claus Garden Home phone 0486/322935. One of the best organized of the homestay options with four spotless and large cottages in the family compound, each with attached bathrooms. Pleasant, quiet and great value. Rs200-300.

Kumily Gate, behind the bus stand phone 0486/322279. Greenish modern block with large, clean rooms and a restaurant and popular, noisy bar on site. Expensive for what it is, but good for late arrivals and it is quite acceptable to haggle here. Rs900-1500.

Maliackal Tourist Home,KK Road phone 0486/322589. Good clean rooms, handy for the bus stand. The most expensive rooms have cable TV and balconies (but no views). Rs200-400.

Shalimar Spice Garden,Murikaddy phone & fax 0486/322132. Approached by a suspension bridge, in a secluded spot on the edge of a cardamom and pepper estate, 5km from Kumily (Rs50 by jeep). Beautiful and tranquil place run by an Italian, with lovely cottages built using traditional Keralan teak structures; there's a pool and good restaurant. Rs2500 and upwards.

Spice Village,Thekkady Road phone 0486/322315, fax 322317. Thatched huts and traditional Keralan wood cottages spread through a well-planted spice garden with a fine restaurant and a pool. You can join master classes in Keralan cookery, and there are lots of activities on offer each day. Popular with tour groups so book ahead. Rs2500 and upwards.

Taj Garden Retreat,Ambalambika Road phone 0486/322273. Luxurious, pseudo-rustic cottages and a main building built to emulate a jungle lodge with great views. Features an elegant restaurant and a pool. Rs2500 and upwards.

Woodlands,Thakkady Road phone 0486/322077. One of the cheapest places to stay in Kumily, and very rudimentary, although clean enough for a short stay, and with friendly management. Campfires can be arranged, a campsite is available, and there's a kitchen for self-catering. Rs100-200.
