Palakkad is well connected to the rest of Kerala and most of the main express trains traveling through to Chennai, Bangalore and points further north stop at Palakkad's railway station,6km to the northeast. The KSRTC bus stand is slap in the centre of town; most accommodation, in budget Indian-style lodges, is nearby. The Ammbadi,on TB Road, opposite the town bus stand and 500m from the KSRTC bus stand (phone 0491/531244; Rs200-600), has comfortable rooms, some a/c, and the restaurant serves Indian and Chinese food. Far more upmarket, the modern Hotel Indraprastha, English Church Road (phone 0491/534641, fax 539531; Rs600 and upwards), boasts large rooms, some with a/c, a gloomy but blissfully cool a/c restaurant serving a mixed menu of Indian, Western and Chinese cuisine, a bar and a pleasant lawn. Fort Palace, W Fort Road (phone 0491/534621; Rs400-1500), is also reasonable, with some a/c rooms, a bar and a restaurant serving good Indian food. |
Another alternative is to head out to KTDC's Garden House at Malampuzha (phone 0491/815217; Rs400-900) which has a range that includes large, ordinary doubles as well as some comfortable a/c rooms. Around the corner from the Indraprastha, the DTPC's tourist office is at Fort Maidan (Mon-Sat 10am-5.30pm; phone 0491/538996). They offer colorful leaflets but not much else, though you can coax them for travel information. Both the Indraprastha and the Fort Palace change money for residents and, in theory, so can the State Bank of India, next door to the Indraprastha
