An assortment of craft shops along MG Road north of Station Road sell sandalwood, brass and Keralan bell-metal oil lamps. The Gandhian Khadi Gramodyog, between Pazhavangadi and Over bridge junctions, stocks hand-loom cloth (dig around for the best stuff), plus radios and cassette machines manufactured by the Women's Federation. Natesan's Antique Arts, further up, is part of a chain that specializes in paintings and temple woodcarvings. Prices are high, but they usually have some beautiful pieces, among them some superb reproductions of Thanjur paintings and traditional inlaid chests for Kathakali costumes.

At first glance most of the bookstores in the area seem largely intended for exam entrants, but some, such as the a/c Continental Books on MG Road, stock a good choice of titles in English, mostly relating to India and with a fair selection of fiction. Smaller but with an equally wide array of English-language fiction and assorted subjects such as philosophy, history and music, DC Books on Statue Road, on the first floor of a building above Statue Junction, is well worth a browse. Other bookshops along MG Road include the south Indian chain store Higginbothams and Paico Books.

Almost at the top of MG Road, on the right-hand side, the excellent little Connemara Market is the place to pick up essentials like plastic buckets, dried and fresh fish, fruit, vegetables, coconut scrapers, exotic bindis, crude wooden toys, coir, woven winnowing baskets and Christmas decorations. It also holds the workshops of several tailors.
