Munnar has plenty of accommodation, although budget options are limited and are unfortunately too close to the bus station for a peaceful sleep. Upmarket visitors generally eat in their hotels; the Royal Retreat 's plush à la carte restaurant is particularly recommended, with an eclectic menu and attentive service, while Gurus,in the old bazaar opposite the government high school is a characterful old-style coffee shop serving south Indian snacks. For tasty, filling and cheap meals, however, you can't beat the Poopada, whose small, no-frills restaurant is open to nonresidents. Saravana in the main market serves good vegetarian "meals" while the East End's plush mid-priced restaurant is the best in the town centre, with a very varied menu. Copper Castle,Bison Valley Road, Kannan Devan hills - phone 0486/530633, fax 530438. Comfortable hotel wedged into the side of a hill high above the valley; the deluxe rooms and restaurant boast excellent views. Unless you have your own car, this place is inconveniently far from town. Rs1500 and upwards. East End,Temple Road, across the river from the bus stand - phone 0486/530451, fax 530227. Immaculate upmarket hotel close to the centre of town, with Raj-style "cottages" in a big garden, and a recommended mid-priced multi-cuisine restaurant with a good varied menu. Rs400-1500. Government Guest House,Mattupatty Road, near the main bazaar, on the far side of the river - phone 0486/530385. Characterful old British bungalow with well-refurbished and comfortable rooms; meals are provided by arrangement. The tariff appears to fluctuate daily, so you may well be able to negotiate a good discount. Rs900-1500.

Hilltop Lodge,on corner of Temple Road and Thekkady Road - phone 0486/530616. Popular with the mountain biking crew, but you'll have to try and ignore the constant racket of traffic outside. This place offers the best budget deal with small, clean rooms, all with attached bathrooms (but no hot water). Rs100-200. KTDC Tea County,Top Station Road - phone 0468/530460, fax 530970. The grandest address in Munnar, with a range of luxurious chalet-style rooms and suites ranged along a hilltop, affording views across the valley. There's a good Indian restaurant, a bar, and a range of sporting and adventure activities, including paragliding and rock climbing. Rs900-2500. Poopada,Kannan Devan hills, on the Manukulam Road - phone 0486/530223. The front looks a tad dilapidated but the good-sized, en-suite rooms are in fine condition. This place has about the best cheap eating in town, along with fine valley views and secluded location. Booking recommended at weekends. Rs600-1500. Royal Retreat,Kannan Devan hills - phone 0486/530240. Pleasant sunny yellow complex at the south end of town; spacious and comfortable rooms, some with brick fireplaces and cane furniture. Rs900-2500. Shree Narayana ("SN") Tourist Home,Kannan Devan hills, on the main road near the tourist office - phone 0486/530212. A popular and cheerful lodge set in forested grounds by a river, with slightly shabby rooms. Unfortunately, a recent price hike means this place isn't such good value anymore. Rs400-900.
