The principal point of orientation in Thrissur is the Round, a road subdivided into North, South, East and West, which encircles the Vadakkunatha temple and maidan at the centre. Once you've established which side of the Round you're on, you can save yourself long walks along the busy pavement by striking out across the green.

The State Art Museum and Zoo (both Tues-Sun 10am-5pm) stand together on Museum Road, ten minutes' walk from Round East, in the northeast of town (turn right at the end of Palace Road and walk 200m down the right-hand side). Although small, the museum has excellent local bronzes, jewelry, fine woodcarvings of fanged temple guardians and a profusion of bell-metal oil lamps. The zoo, however, houses a miserable set of tenants, although it can be grimly fascinating to observe the variety of snakes that slither locally (king cobra, krait, and viper).

Next door to the Yatri Niwas hotel, the Kerala Sangeet Natak Academy (phone 0487/332548) features a large auditorium that hosts occasional music and dance concerts as well as Keralan theatre, which has an enthusiastic following and tends to be heavily political. Around the corner is the Kerala Lalitha Kala Akademi (phone 0487/333773), which often holds exhibitions of contemporary Indian art.

One of the most important churches for Thrissur's large Christian population is the Syrian Catholic Lourdes Cathedral, just over 1km east of the Medical College Hospital on Round East, along St Thomas College Road. Three daily masses serve a regular congregation of nine hundred. Like many of Kerala's Indo-Gothic churches, the exterior of dome and spires is more impressive than the interior, with its unadorned metal rafters and corrugated iron ceiling. Steps lead down from the altar to the crypt, a rather dilapidated copy of the grotto in Lourdes.
