In front of a depiction of the god in the meditation, or prayer room, at Padmanabhapuram Palace lies a sword. In 1750, Raja Marthanda Varma symbolically presented this weapon to Padmanabha, the god Vishnu, who reclines on the sacred serpent Anantha in the midst of the cosmic ocean, and thereby dedicated the kingdom of Travancore to Vishnu. From that day, the raja took the title of Padmanabhadasa ("servant of Padmanabha"), and ruled as a servant of the god.

Thus Travancore belonged to Vishnu, and the raja was merely its custodian - a spiritual, and presumably legal, loophole that is said to have proved invaluable in restricting the power of the British in Travancore to install a British resident
