Vadakkunatha temple (closed to non-Hindus), is a walled complex of fifteen shrines, dating from the twelfth century and earlier, the principal of which is dedicated to Shiva. Inside the walls, the grassy compound is surprisingly quiet and spacious, with a striking apsidal shrine dedicated to Ayappa. Sadly, many of the temple's treasures, such as the woodcarvings and murals, are not as well maintained as they might be.

Once an essential ingredient of the temple's cultural life, but now under-used and neglected, the long, sloping-roofed Kuttambalam theatre with carved panels and lathe-turned wooden pillars, is the venue for the ancient Sanskrit performance forms Chakyar Kuttu and Kutiyattam (closed to non-Hindus).
